A great celebration for CoTrain...
CoTrain had the privilege of attending the Construction News Workforce Awards, held on Thursday, 14th November at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel in London. It was an evening of celebration, recognition, and incredible pride as one of our former apprentices, Zak Scarborough, won the Apprentice of the Year category.
Zak's journey with CoTrain began six years ago when he enrolled in our Level 3 Construction Site Manager Qualification program. After successfully completing his apprenticeship, Zak joined Galliford Try (GT), where he has continued to excel. Over the years, he has advanced his skills, completing Level 4 and Level 5 qualifications, and this September, he embarked on a Level 6 degree course at London South Bank University.
This award is a testament to Zak’s hard work, determination, and commitment to personal and professional growth.
The event was made even more special as CoTrain's Mark Pope had the honour of sitting with a select gathering from Galliford Try including Directors and various members from the Site management Teams that have supported Zak over the years were invited to support him on the evening. These included his first site manager, Chris, and his most recent site manager, Matt.
It was clear to everyone at the table how much Zak has grown—not just in stature but as a professional. Despite his incredible achievements, Zak has remained grounded, level-headed, and humble. The respect and admiration from his colleagues at GT were truly inspiring to witness.
One of the highlights of the evening was seeing Zak’s genuine surprise and joy when his name was announced as the winner. Overwhelmed with emotion, he stepped aside to call his parents and share the incredible news. Zak had been thrilled just to make it to the final six, so winning the award was an unforgettable moment for him and everyone who has supported him.
For Mark, this was a career-defining moment:
“Probably one of the proudest moments of my time working with apprentices. The hug and heartfelt thanks Zak gave me for giving him that chance all those years ago was incredibly touching.”
Zak’s story is a shining example of what can be achieved through dedication, hard work, and the right support. He is undoubtedly a rising star in the construction industry, and we cannot wait to see all that he accomplishes in the years ahead.
Congratulations, Zak! Your success is a testament to the power of apprenticeships, and we are so proud to have played a part in your journey.
Here’s to celebrating this incredible achievement and the bright future ahead for Zak and all the talented apprentices shaping the future of our industry.
